Eukaryotic elongation factor-2 kinase (EEF2K) is threonine kinase whichregulates protein synthesis by means of controlling the rate of peptide chainelongation. Upon activation through a diversity of upstream kinases includingAMPK or TRPM7, EEF2K phosphorylates the elongation factor EEF2 at a sole site,renders it unable to bind ribosomes and therefore inactive. In turn, the rate ofprotein synthesis is being reduced.
