Melengestrol acetate is a synthetic progestogen and derivative of progesterone.1 It binds to progesterone receptors in rhesus monkey myometrial cytosolic preparations with high affinity relative to progesterone. Melengestrol acetate (0.1 mg/animal per day) suppresses estrus in rats.2 It reduces tumor growth in androgen-dependent and -independent prostate tumors in rats when administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg.3 Formulations containing melengestrol acetate have been used to increase weight gain, improve feed efficiency, and suppress estrus in heifer cattle.
