SPQ is a fluorescent chloride indicator.1 Its fluorescence is rapidly quenched by chloride in vitro. It has been used to assess voltage-sensitive chloride transport in placental microvillus vesicles. It has also been used to continuously quantify intracellular calcium efflux induced by parathyroid hormone, forskolin , and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate in isolated human erythrocytes.2 In addition, SPQ has been used to determine the type of ion conductance induced by the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in HEK293 cells expressing pTrial10-CRTR2.3 SPQ displays excitation maxima of 320 and 350 nm and an emission maximum of 445 nm.1

Fish sauce fermentation using Marinococcus halotolerans SPQ isolate as a starter culture

A total of 344 halophilic bacteria were isolated from fish fermentation broths, solar salt crystals, seawater, and muds from ponds of salt pans in Vietnam and subjected to aroma evaluation using fish broth containing 29 ~ 30% (w/v) NaCl. One isolate from a salt crystal with the highest aroma score was selected, identified by using 16S rDNA sequence, and named Marinococcus halotolerans SPQ. The GC-MS results of the fish broth fermented by M. halotolerans SPQ revealed elevated concentrations of several aroma compounds such as ethyl alcohol, 1-propanol, 1-butyl alcohol, 1-amyl alcohol, and methionol. During the validation tests for M. halotolerans SPQ, using 2 kg of anchovy fish in 30% (w/v) NaCl at pH 5.78, the total and amino nitrogen values in the broth increased over time from 15.2 g/L at the beginning to 26.3 g/L at 6th month, with these values being comparable to those of the control. The ammoniacal nitrogen value (2.52 g/L) in the inoculated broth at 6th month was slightly higher than that (2.21 g/L) of control. The histamine content of the fish broth inoculated with M. halotolerans SPQ after 6 months was 110.12 mg/L, less than the maximum permitted safety limit of 200 mg/L, indicating it to be safe. Physical parameters, such as the total, amino, ammoniacal nitrogens, and histamine content of fish broth fermented by M. halotolerans MPQ met the standards for Vietnamese fish sauces. Two important umami amino acids, aspartic and glutamic acid, were seen to significantly increase, by 23.5% and 35.1%, respectively, even in the extremely harsh fermentation conditions posed by 30% (w/v) NaCl. The color, odor, and taste of the fish sauce fermented by M. halotolerans SPQ elicited the highest preference score accorded by the panelists. Taken together, M. halotolerans SPQ is a promising starter culture strain for fish sauce fermentation.

Race and self-reported paranoia: Increased item endorsement on subscales of the SPQ

There is a dearth of research examining how individual-level and systemic racism may lead to elevated diagnostic and symptom rates of paranoia in Black Americans. The present study employed item response theory methods to investigate item- and subscale-level functioning in the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) in 388 Black and 450 White participants across the schizophrenia-spectrum (i.e., non-psychiatric controls, individuals with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or schizotypal personality disorder). It was predicted that (1) Black participants would score significantly higher than Whites on the Suspiciousness and Paranoid Ideation subscale of the SPQ, while controlling for total SPQ severity and relevant demographics and (2) Black participants would endorse these subscale items at a lower latent severity level (i.e., total SPQ score) compared to Whites. Generalized linear modeling showed that Black participants endorsed higher scores on subscales sampling paranoia (e.g., Suspiciousness and Paranoid Ideation), while White participants endorsed higher rates within disorganized/positive symptomatology subscales (e.g., Odd or Eccentric Behavior). IRT analyses showed that Black individuals also endorse items within the Suspiciousness and Paranoid Ideation subscale at lower latent severity levels, leading to inflated subscale scores when compared to their White counterparts. Results indicate prominent race effects on self-reported paranoia as assessed by the SPQ. This study provides foundational data to parse what could be normative endorsements of paranoia versus indicators of clinical risk in Black Americans. Implications and recommendations for paranoia research and assessment are discussed.

The Types of Learning Approaches Used by Engineering Students in Three Scenarios: An Adaptation of the R-SPQ-2F to China

Deep learning is a type of high-level learning that has received widespread attention in research on higher education; however, learning scenarios as an important variable have been ignored to some extent in past studies. This study aimed to explore the learning state of engineering students in three learning scenarios: theoretical learning, experimental learning, and engineering practice. Samples of engineering university students in China were recruited online and offline; the students filled in the engineering Education-Study Process Questionnaire, which was revised from the R-SPQ-2F. The results of clustering analysis showed four types of learning approaches in the three scenarios: typical deep learning, typical shallow learning, deep-shallow learning, and free learning. Engineering learners in different learning scenarios tended to adopt different learning approaches and showed gender differences. Due to factors such as differences in culture and choice of learning opportunities, the deep and shallow learners demonstrated excellent learning performance, which is in sharp contrast with the "learning failure" exhibited by such students abroad.

The Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire - Child (SPQ-C): Psychometric properties and relations to behavioral problems with multi-informant ratings

The Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) is one of the most widely used screening tools for schizotypy in adults. The Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Child version (SPQ-C) was recently developed to assess schizotypy in children and has a similar three-factor structure to the adult SPQ (i.e., Cognitive-Perceptual, Interpersonal-Affective, and Disorganization). However, few studies to date have reported on the psychometric properties and the usefulness of the SPQ-C in Eastern populations, including Mainland China. This study presents the first psychometric assessment of the Chinese SPQ-C in Mainland China. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to assess the factor structure of the SPQ-C in 1668 children (M = 12.10, SD = 0.60 years) from the China Jintan Child Cohort Study. Our findings document a three-factor structure and partial measurement invariance across residential location and gender, replicating the psychometric properties of the SPQ-C in English. The Chinese SPQ-C further correlates with standard behavioral problems (i.e., Child Behavior Checklist, Youth Self-Report and Teacher Report Form), demonstrating construct validity and utility as a child psychopathology assessment tool. Our findings provide the first robust psychometric evidence for a three-factor structure of the Chinese SPQ-C in a large Mainland Chinese sample, and suggest that the SPQ-C is suitable as a screening tool for schizotypy in community children who may be at risk for behavioral problems and later psychosis.

The SPQ: a scale for the assessment of schizotypal personality based on DSM-III-R criteria

Existing self-report measures of schizotypal personality assess only one to three of the nine traits of schizotypal personality disorder. This study describes the development of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ), a self-report scale modeled on DSM-III-R criteria for schizotypal personality disorder and containing subscales for all nine schizotypal traits. Two samples of normal subjects (n = 302 and n = 195) were used to test replicability of findings. The SPQ was found to have high sampling validity, high internal reliability (0.91), test-retest reliability (0.82), convergent validity (0.59 to 0.81), discriminant validity, and criterion validity (0.63, 0.68), findings which were replicated across samples. Fifty-five percent of subjects scoring in the top 10 percent of SPQ scores had a clinical diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder. Thus, the SPQ may be useful in screening for schizotypal personality disorder in the general population and also in researching the correlates of individual schizotypal traits.
